Lion Rock Hill

The project
A silhouette tied to Hong Kong
Lion Rock is a 495-metre mountain within Lion Rock Country Park, between North Kowloon and Sha Tin. The country park was designated on 24 June 1977 and was among the earliest established in Hong Kong. Viewed from a distance, the mountain is known for its resemblance to a seated lion with its head facing west.
Its importance extends beyond the landscape itself. Lion Rock has become closely associated with Hong Kong’s identity and ideas of resilience and determination. Its silhouette is also used in Brand Hong Kong’s visual identity as a symbol of the city’s “can-do” spirit.
The supplied reference image shows why its form is so recognisable. Exposed grey rock rises sharply through dense green vegetation, while the ridge shifts between abrupt vertical faces, irregular peaks and gentler slopes. Rather than a single summit, Lion Rock is defined by the relationship between these changing forms — particularly the prominent head-like profile at one end.
Those characteristics make silhouette especially important when translating the mountain into a collectible brick model. Even with considerable simplification, the profile needs to remain immediately recognisable.

Design process
Building the profile first
The Curatrum model uses 278 bricks to interpret Lion Rock as a compact display piece. Its composition is led by the overall outline: the raised lion-like head, the lower section behind it and the longer mass of the mountain extending across the base.
Across the face of the model, angled elements, stepped surfaces and irregular grey forms break up what could otherwise become a flat wall of brick. Different grey tones add variation across the rock face, reflecting the uneven colour and exposed surfaces visible in the original landscape. A narrow area of green along the lower edge introduces the vegetation that surrounds much of the real mountain.
The supplied project description also identifies small building details at the front of the model. These provide another layer of visual interest while helping to contrast the scale of the built environment with the much larger rock formation behind it.
The model is contained within a smooth rectangular border. This restrained base gives the irregular mountain form a clear frame and turns the landscape into a composed collectible object, while keeping attention on the silhouette that makes Lion Rock immediately identifiable.
